Welcome to the first website of Status, launched in December 2010, the new HIV prevention action organisation for gay men.
Our mission is to substantially reduce the number of new infections in gay men in the UK by harder-hitting and persistent campaigns to shift the gay community's norms back towards safer sex and away from condom-free bareback sex.
Although HIV treatments have considerably improved, nevertheless there is no cure and each new infection carries a huge personal, social and financial cost.
It is tragic then that there has been a steady rise in new infections amongst gay men since the 1990s. In 2010 more than 3,000 gay men were diagnosed with HIV in the UK, and research shows that many of these were young men and many were infected within the last year.
The gay community has been failed by the current system for HIV prevention. Of late there has been a lack of urgency in the HIV sector, even amongst many of the HIV charities. Over the last 13 years millions of pounds of taxpayers' money earmarked for HIV prevention have been squandered. A new structure and approach is needed if the number of new infections in gay men is going to be significantly reduced
Status aims to be a cross between a thinktank and a mass movement. We want to change the face of HIV prevention in the UK. We want to influence policy, improve professional practice, and motivate ordinary gay men. We want to revive and adapt the community spirit of the 1980s and 1990s to the new challenges of the second decade of the 21st century. Click here for what we think is needed.
